Conversamos con el baterista de Amon Amarth, quien nos contó en exclusiva detalles de la visita de los vikingos.
El año pasado Amon Amarth publicó de forma oficial su último trabajo estudio, ‘Jomsviking’, trabajo que actualmente se encuentran promocionando de forma mundial con la gira homónima del disco. Además la agrupación nórdica sumo en sus filas al músico de origen chileno, Joakim Wallgren, quien pasó a ser parte de forma definitiva a la agrupación sueca. Con respecto a sus origines, su ingreso al conjunto y la gira junto a Abbath, Rockerio habló en exclusiva con Jocke.
1) Primero partir contándonos un poco de tu historia y tus orígenes. ¿Cómo fue nacer en Santiago pero criarte en Suecia?
Joakim: No es tan complicado como suena. Como dijiste, nací en Maipo, Santiago y fui adoptado cuando tenía dos meses por suecos. Eso significa que soy chileno pero con Suecia en mente, siendo que fui creciendo en esta cultura. Amo Suecia, y será emocionante y muy emocional, volver a Chile después de tanto tiempo (32 años).

1) First tell us a little about your origins. How was it to be born in Santiago, leave, and then grow so far in Sweden?.
Joakim: It’s not as complicated as it sounds. As you’ve already mentioned, I was born in Maipo, Santiago and adopted to Sweden when I was two months old. That pretty much means I’m Chilean by approach, but Swedish in mind since I’m raised in a Swedish way. I love Sweden and it’s going to be exiting, and most likely very emotional, to get back to Chile after such a long time (32 years)..

2) ¿Nunca sentiste la necesidad de volver al país o saber más del mismo?.
Joakim: No realmente, tuve una infancia perfecta en Suecia, gracias a mi amorosa familia. Nunca me pregunté «cómo habría sido de no ser adoptado». Siempre he estado agradecido de mi infancia en un hogar perfecto

2) Never feel the need to return to Chile, or know more about the country?
Joakim: Not really. I’ve had the perfect childhood in Sweden thanks to my loving family. I never really wondered “what it could have been like if I wasn’t adopted”. I’m forever thankful for my childhood in a perfect home.

3) Con respecto a Chile y Sudamérica. ¿Conoces bandas de aquí?
Joakim: No estoy al tanto de la escena musical sudamericana. Pero obvio conozco bandas como Sepultura, Angra, Soulfly, Krisiun, Pentagram, Dogma y otras más. Tal vez debería empezar a indagar más ahí

3) About Chile and Southamerica, Do you know any bands from here?
Joakim: I’m not into the South American music scene too much. Of course I know bands like Sepultura, Angra, Soulfly, Krisiun, Pentagram, Dogma and those bands. Maybe I should start dig deeper here.

4) Has contado que tus principales influencias se encuentran en el heavy y power metal, pero que siempre terminas tocando en bandas death y black metal. ¿Por qué crees tu que sucede esto?.
Joakim: Principalmente porque nunca encontré personas decentes con quien tocar heavy/power metal. Conocí personas que eran realmente hábiles y ambiciosas, pero nunca se llegó a algo. No toco ningún otro instrumento, así que mucho no pude contribuir con alguna otra cosa más que algunos patrones de batería, visiones, ideas y algunas charlas. A todos quienes conocía que tocaban instrumentos, querían tocar black o death, y que me dije a mi mismo, «seguro, ¿por qué no?», Así que practiqué golpes más rápidos y explosivos por años y creo que todo cambió para bien, como se puede oír en Valkyrja (y algunas otras bandas).

4) You have said that your main influences lie on heavy and power metal yet you always end playing on death and black metal bands, why do you think this happens?
Joakim: Mainly because I never really found some decent people to play heavy/power metal with. I did have some people who were really skilled and ambitious about it back and forth, but nothing never happened. I don’t play any other instruments so I couldn’t really contribute with anything but drum patterns, vision, ideas and pep talk. Everyone I knew who played instruments wanted to play black/death so I thought so my self “sure, why not” and I practiced kick drums, blast beats and grind for years and I think it turned out pretty well as you can hear on the Valkyrja (and several other bands) albums.

5) ¿Cómo se gestionó tu incorporación a Amon Amarth?
Joakim: Fui recomendado por mi amigo Tobias Gustafsson (baterista del disco ‘Jomsviking’) y todo eso, un tiempo después Olavi me llamó. Este fue el momento en el que cambió mi vida. Hicimos algunas audiciones con muy poco tiempo y todo salió bien, empezamos con una enorme gira de 8 semanas por Estados Unidos y ya sabes todo lo demás.

5) How was your entry to Amon Amarth arranged?
Joakim: I was recommended by my friend Tobias Gustafsson (drummer for ‘Jomsviking’ album) and all of a sudden Olavi called me. This is the time when my life changed. We did some auditions with very short notice, and it all turned out very well and we started off with an enormous 8 week US headline tour and yeah.. you all know the rest.

6) Ahora eres el baterista permanente en Amon Amarth, después de casi un año. ¿Cómo ha sido esta experiencia?.
Joakim: Ha sido asombroso, no hay palabras para describir lo feliz que estoy, agradecido y orgulloso de ser capaz de hacer esto un diario vivir. Tocar batería casi todos los días, viajando por el mundo, conocer otras grandes bandas, me encanta.

6) Now that you are the permanent drummer, after almost a year , how has the experience been?.
Joakim: It’s been amazing. There are no words to describe how happy, thankful and proud I am to be able to do this for a living. Playing drums almost every day, travelling the world, meeting other great bands.. I love it.

7) ¿En que se encuentra Amon Amarth actualmente?.
Joakim: Primero que todo estamos terminando esta gira. Tenemos un festival de verano cerca y luego vamos a Rusia en septiembre, luego cerramos este ciclo de gira y nos concentramos en nuevo material.

7) What is Amon Amarth working on at the moment?
Joakim: First of all we are finishing this tour. We have a summer festival tour coming up and then we head for Russia in September and along with that we most likely aim to wrap this tour cycle up and focus on new stuff.

8) Esta gira cuenta con la participación de Abbath ¿Cómo ha sido girar con ellos?.
Joakim: La verdad es que super genial. Son unos chicos super simpáticos, nos divertimos mucho. Este tour ha sido más de «el tour de volar todos los días», por lo que no hay real tour, pero nos llevamos bien y todos parecen estar pasándola bien.

8) About touring with Abbath, how has been in the road with them?.
Joakim: Super cool actually. They are really nice guys and we have a lot of fun. This tour have been more of a fly-in-everyday-tour, so there’s no real tour bus hangouts, but we get along very well and everyone seems to have a great time!

9) El público chileno es famoso por su energía. ¿Qué esperas de este concierto?.
Joakim: Para ser honesto, no sé qué esperar, solo quiero que sea impresionante, pero no quiero llamar la mala suerte. Creo que la mayoría del público sabe que soy originario de Santiago, así que será genial. Hemos tenido público bastante potente estas pasadas fechas, así que espero que la fanaticada chilena sea aún más intensa!.

9) Chilean crowd are famous for their energy, what do you expect from this show?.
Joakim: To be honest I don’t know what to expect. I want it to be amazing, but I don’t want to jinx it. I think (hope) most of the crowd know I’m originally from Santiago so that’s going to be great! We’ve had some real heavy crowd chanting these past dates so I wish for the chilean audience to be even louder!.
